Volvo Introduces the EX30 Cross Country

For 28 years, Volvo’s Cross Country (CC) badge has been synonymous with estate models that offer a rugged, SUV-inspired design. Now, for the first time, the Swedish automaker is applying the CC treatment to a compact electric vehicle, the EX30.

Although the EX30 is already classified as a crossover, the Cross Country version enhances its off-road appeal with tougher styling elements and introduces new adventure experience packages for customers.

Volvo Cars South Africa has not yet confirmed whether the EX30 Cross Country will be available locally. However, given that the standard EX30 was the country’s best selling electric vehicle in 2024 and considering South Africans’ love for the outdoors, it would be surprising if this rugged variant were not introduced.

The EX30 Cross Country comes equipped with a twin-motor all-wheel drive system as standard, and its ground clearance has been raised by 18mm. It also features exclusive black wheels, which can be fitted with optional 18-inch all-terrain tyres for enhanced off-road capability.

While Volvo has yet to reveal the full powertrain lineup, the EX30 Cross Country is expected to offer a range of up to 427 km on a single charge, with fast-charging capabilities that allow it to recharge from 10% to 80% in as little as 26 minutes.

To complement the vehicle’s adventurous nature, Volvo will offer a selection of accessories, including roof baskets, load carriers, mud flaps, and the aforementioned all-terrain tyres. Additional bespoke experience packages will be detailed at a later stage.

Jim Rowan, Chief Executive Officer of Volvo Cars, stated that Volvo launched its first Cross Country car over 25 years ago and that the concept of durable, all weather vehicles remains central to the brand.

“In Sweden we face harsh winters, but we also like to make the most of them by getting out and exploring our amazing nature, even when it’s minus 20 Celsius outside. That’s why we want to deliver a fully rounded experience, not simply a car, to our EX30 Cross Country customers.”

As mentioned, the Volvo EX30 led South Africa’s EV market in 2024, with 406 units sold. Additionally, Volvo moved 133 units of the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge models, bringing its total EV sales to 539 for the year outperforming its closest competitor by 20.86%.
