Alcohol Identified as a Major Factor in South Africa’s Latest Crime Stats
Alcohol remains a significant factor in driving some of the country’s most severe crimes, with police reports revealing that numerous cases of rape and hundreds of murders were committed by individuals under the influence.
On Monday, police officials released the latest crime statistics for the period between July and September, during which 6,545 murders were reported nationwide.
South African Police Service (SAPS) crime registrar general Norman Sekhukhune highlighted that alcohol played a role in more than 200 of these cases.
“In 227 of the murders it was indicated that the perpetrator had used alcohol during the commission of the murder,” he said.
Additionally, over 10,000 rape cases were reported in the same period, with more than a thousand involving alcohol.
“In 1,466 rape incidents, it was indicated that it involved the use of alcohol,” Sekhukhune added.
While alcohol’s role in these crimes is significant, the overall number of murders and rapes decreased compared to the previous year, with murders falling by 400 and rapes decreasing by 325.
