Mourinho Teases Premier League Return Ahead of Man United Europa Clash
Jose Mourinho teased a possible return to the Premier League after being asked about the current state of his former club, Manchester United. In a lighthearted remark, Mourinho joked that he might still receive a bonus from Manchester United as he prepares to face his former team in the Europa League.
Mourinho managed Manchester United for two and a half years before being dismissed in December 2018. During his tenure, he oversaw 144 games and led the team to 84 victories across all competitions.
His first season was marked by winning the Europa League, League Cup, and Community Shield, although United only managed to finish sixth in the league.
The following season saw United finish second, 19 points behind Manchester City, though the team did not win any silverware.
However, Mourinho hinted that he might still claim a title if Manchester City is punished for alleged financial misconduct. The club is currently under investigation for 130 financial offenses, including providing inaccurate financial information and failing to cooperate with the Premier League’s inquiries.
Possible sanctions range from point deductions to title forfeitures or even expulsion from the league. The case is ongoing, with a verdict expected before the end of 2024, after which appeals could further extend the process.
Should City be found guilty, Mourinho cheekily remarked that he could be entitled to additional compensation from United. He made these comments ahead of his Fenerbahce team’s Europa League match against Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United in Istanbul.
Despite his dismissal six years ago, Mourinho refused to criticise United, who currently sit 12th in the Premier League after a rocky start to the season.
He expressed no ill will towards the club, saying, “Honestly, I didn’t lose one minute thinking about it. I wish the best to Manchester United since the moment I left. I left with a good feeling for the club and its fans and I want the best for them. If things aren’t going amazingly well for them, it’s not something that makes me happy.”
Mourinho also acknowledged United’s decision to stick with their current coach, noting that their commitment to long-term stability and trust in the manager is a positive approach.
