Heavy rains continue to cause widespread destruction in the Eastern Cape, leaving thousands displaced with one person confirmed dead.
Nelson Mandela Bay has been the worst affected, with homes, roads, and bridges submerged under floodwaters. Stranded motorists were stuck on flooded roads as authorities worked to respond to the crisis.
The South African Weather Service has issued a level 6 warning for disruptive rainfall in the province.
As Tuesday afternoon turned into evening, numerous residents in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro found themselves stranded, with many homes destroyed by the storm.
Some people remain trapped inside their homes due to the severe flooding, while large parts of the metro are also without electricity as the heavy rains have caused power outages.
Although the municipality has dispatched disaster relief teams, reaching the most affected areas may take time.
The municipality is reportedly holding a meeting to intensify their response to the damage and to assist impacted communities.
