Local referee chief Abdul Ebrahim praised match official Silkhumbuzo Gasa for his performance during Mamelodi Sundowns’ 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs, despite criticism from fans.
The former FIFA referee stated that the PSL match was well officiated and that Gasa’s and his assistants’ performances will undergo a formal review.
During Sundowns’ victory, Kaizer Chiefs’ players and management were upset after Edson Castillo’s late goal was disallowed, and some argued that Sundowns’ second goal was offside.
Ebrahim commended Gasa’s work and provided an update on the potential implementation of VAR, following sports minister Gayton McKenzie’s advocacy for the technology.
“The referees did very well; we will review the reports. If you consider the disallowed goal, VAR would likely have reviewed it. However, VAR is still under discussion,” Ebrahim said.
Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi mentioned that he told referee Sikhumbuzo Gasa that they did not need any favors after their 2-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns.
