Disaster management teams in KwaZulu-Natal are on alert due to forecasts of possible snowfall in parts of the province next week.
MEC for the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Thulasizwe Buthelezi, mentioned that early predictions indicate extremely cold temperatures on Monday and Tuesday, which could lead to snow in areas around the Drakensberg mountains, including the Harry Gwala, uThukela, uMgungundlovu, and Amajuba Districts.
He emphasized that these forecasts are preliminary and further updates will follow.
Buthelezi assured residents that the Provincial Disaster Management Centre is actively coordinating with stakeholders, including municipalities, social partners, and government entities responsible for law enforcement, disaster response, and road management, to ensure preparedness for any adverse weather conditions.
He urged residents to stay informed through reliable weather forecasts.
Luthando Masimini, a forecaster from the South African Weather Service (Saws), noted that the country has been experiencing very cold conditions with rainfall in the southern, central, and eastern regions due to a low-pressure system.
He explained that such systems are typical for this time of year, but this one was followed by unusually high temperatures.
Recent heavy snowfall in KZN resulted in the deaths of at least two people and left hundreds of motorists stranded on the N3 highway.
Siboniso Duma, MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, is expected to brief the media on the department’s preparedness for the anticipated severe weather next week.
