MABOPANE – More police officers have been roped in as the violence continues around the capital Pretoria.
State Security Minister David Mahlobo visited Mabopane on Thursday after several shops at the Central City Shopping Centre were looted.
Protesters later set tyres alight, blockading parts of the township’s main roads.
Residents have gone on the rampage following the announcement of Thoko Didiza as the Tshwane mayoral candidate.
Five people have been killed and at least 200 arrested since violence broke out in the municipality.
Mahlobo has condemned the looting and urged residents to voice their grievances through the right channels.
“The incidents that here are very unfortunate because people of Tshwane, especially people of Mabopane, they are peace loving people.
“We have all chosen a path of peace that if there are problems we’ll always sit down and actually deal with our problems,” he said.
“The issue is that if people have grievances, they know the mechanisms to voice their grievances.
“But the manner they voice these grievances must never undermine the rights of others.”
