The mayoral term of the former mayor of Tshwane Murunwa Makwarela is the shortest mayoral term in the history of Tshwane, says municipal workers at the Tshwane Municipality after the resignation of the disgraced mayor on Friday. Murunwa Makwarela, says his resignation is not an admission of guilt but rather to allow the City of Tshwane to focus on service delivery.

Makwarela tendered his resignation on Friday after it was found that the submitted letter of rehabilitation, he used to prove that he was not insolvent is fake. To protect the image of the mayor’s office and the name of the city, he said he has decided to “remove himself” from the position of mayor.

“I have instructed my lawyers to initiate proceedings to adequately deal with this matter and all involved in this ‘decampaign’ initiative by the DA and its coalition partners.”

In response to the event, Cope retaliated by firing Murunwa Makwarela after it was confirmed on Friday that he had submitted a fake court order to retain the mayoral chain.

Cope’s deputy president William Madisha said the party was extremely angry after Makwarela submitted a fake insolvency rehabilitation certificate in a bid to retain the mayorship after being backed by the ANC and EFF for the position.

Madisha also told the media that Makwarela was no longer a member of Cope and said the party would be taking legal action against him.

“I must emphasise that Cope believes in a code of conduct. We have a code of conduct. What this man has done is extremely unfortunate, it’s terrible, and we want to apologise to the people of Tshwane.
