DURBAN – The source responsible for medical waste being washed ashore on several Durban beaches remains a mystery.
Four beaches in the city have been temporarily closed after waste and mounds of rubbish washed up on shore on Wednesday.
Officials say the debris, which includes condoms and medicine containers, could pose a health risk to bathers and beach users.
They estimate clean-up operations could take up to two weeks.
The eThekwini municipality has vowed to crack down on those responsible.
“We are going to plead for the highest sanction possible,” said the municipality’s Thembinkosie Ngcobo.
“Obviously this is going to affect our ecosystem and even affect the economy of our city.”
