President Cyril Ramaphosa has joined world leaders in sending messages of support to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who is in intensive care after his coronavirus symptoms worsened on Monday.
The 55-year-old has been given oxygen at a London hospital but is not yet on a ventilator, with authorities saying he has a persistent high temperature.
In a tweet of support to Johnson, Ramaphosa says despite the world going through a challenging period, we shall overcome the COVID-19 pandemic.
Wishing Prime Minister @BorisJohnson a full and speedy recovery, and sending our support to him and to the people of the United Kingdom. We are going through a most challenging period but we shall overcome. Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones at this time.

Messages of support have also been sent from US President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, among others.

The UK has over 52 000 COVID-19 cases and over 5000 deaths.
There have been no further updates on the PM’s condition.
