JOHANNESBURG – Opposition parties are opposed to President Jacob Zuma’s salary hike.
On Thursday, the National Assembly approved Zuma’s annual salary of R2.8 million and for it to be backdated to April 2015.
The Democratic Alliance, Economic Freedom Fighters, Congress of the People and African Christian Democratic Party rejected the ANC’s motion to increase Zuma’s salary by 4.4 percent.
The parties argued that Zuma didn’t deserve a salary hike due to his handling of the economy and Nkandla.
“I think it is grotesque that on the verge of South Africa being downgraded to junk status…we want to give this man a salary increase in salary. President Jacob Zuma does not deserve a cent to this increase, he has failed to perform, “said DA’s chief whip John Steenhuisen.
The ANC labelled the opposition parties hypocritical because the day before Zuma had approved salary hikes for all MPs and MPLs.
“The cheap posturing and hypocrisy by certain opposition MPs who voted against the increase for the President, whilst they happily pocketed the salary increases he approved recently, is shameful. The President has led by example over the years by showing sensitivity to our people’s economic conditions,” said the ANC in a statement.
