JOHANNESBURG – Six people, including two children, died Friday night after the minibus taxi in which they were travelling crashed into a metal centre barrier on M2 freeway, east bound, before the Geldenhuys Interchange in Germiston Ekurhuleni.
Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) said its rescue team from Germiston Central Fire Station received a call around 20:44 8.45 pm informing them of the tragedy. They responded immediately.
“On arrival, it was found that a minibus taxi carrying about 19 passengers had crashed against a barrier on the freeway ejecting one adult,” DEMS said.
Six people were declared dead on the scene by paramedics. The taxi driver and two minors were among the casualties.
Two other passengers sustained critical injuries, nine had serious injuries and three were slightly hurt.
The injured were taken to Charlotte Maxeke hospital, Hillbrow clinic, and Betha Gxowa Hospital in Germiston.
Police are investigating the cause of the fatal crash.
