PRETORIA : 11 people were killed and 59 others injured this morning after a bus rolled off the N1 Highway between Ventersburg and Winsburg in the Free State.
ER24 paramedics, along with various other services, arrived on the scene to find a large bus lying on its roof on the side of the road. Occupants from the bus were strewn across the scene.
A triage area was set so that paramedics could effectively treat the patients. On inspection of the scene, paramedics discovered that 11 people had sustained fatal injuries in the collision. A number of these patients lay trapped beneath the bus. Unfortunately nothing more could be done for these patients and they were declared dead on scene.
A further 59 patients were found on scene with various injuries. 21 of these patients were in a critical condition and required advanced life support interventions.
Once all the patients were treated, they were transported to various hospitals in the area for urgent treatment. The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.

The Minister of Transport, Ms Dipuo Peters, passes her condolences to the families, friends and the entire African National Congress family, in particular the ANC Ekurhuleni region, Grace Flathela Zone, for the loss of volunteers involved in a bus carnage in the Free State, today, 17 April 2016.
The bus overturned around Kroonstaad earlier this morning when returning from the ANC’s Election Manifesto Launch, which was held yesterday, 16 April 2016, at Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape.
In the interim, Minister Peters confirms that eleven people died while others were airlifted to various hospitals in the Free State.
Minister Peters wishes those admitted to hospital a speedy recovery, and enjoined the RTMC to immediately commence with the investigations into the cause of the carnage and for the Road Accident Fund to give the family of the deceased and the injured the necessary support and comfort.
All attempts are made to track and inform the next of kin on the eleven fatalities.
Minister Peters thanks the Free State MEC for Police, Roads and Transport, Butana Komphela, the Road Traffic Management Corporation and emergency services for their swift response in assisting the injured.
