The South African Police Service confirmed that Tete was shot at NU 17, Mdantsane, on 21 August 2026, in an attack that also left a 27-year-old woman wounded. She remains in hospital.

A 22-year-old suspect arrested on Saturday, a day after the shooting, has now been formally charged with murder and attempted murder and is expected to appear before the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Police made further arrests on Sunday, taking three men aged 27, 27 and 28 into custody. All three are expected to appear in connection with the main murder case before the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 25 August.

Two of the suspects arrested in Scenery Park on Sunday are also expected to appear separately before the KuGompo Magistrate’s Court on charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. Police have not yet publicly established in the information released whether the firearms allegedly recovered are directly connected to the weapon used to kill Tete.

The attempted murder charge relates to the woman who was travelling with Tete when the attack occurred. Police have provided limited information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting as investigators continue working to establish the full sequence of events and the motive behind the killing.

A 30-year-old man who was initially apprehended on 22 August has meanwhile been released and is now regarded as a potential witness rather than a suspect.

The rapid arrests represent a significant development in a murder that has shocked South Africa’s boxing community, but the case remains at an early stage. The suspects appearing before court have not been convicted, and the allegations against them will now be tested through the criminal justice process.

SAPS has also cautioned members of the public and media against circulating speculation or unverified claims about the killing, warning that doing so could compromise both the continuing investigation and subsequent court proceedings.

Attention will now turn to the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court as prosecutors begin placing the allegations against the accused before the court and more details about the circumstances surrounding Zolani Tete’s final hours potentially emerge.

Anyone with additional information about the murder of Zolani Tete or circumstances surrounding the shooting in Mdantsane can contact the SAPS or share information confidentially with TownPress at press@townpress.co.za.
