CAPE TOWN – The Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape goes to its provincial congress this weekend without two senior party leaders. Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille has been suspended from party activities and Western Cape Premier Helen Zille is off to a wedding.
This means neither of them will vote as special votes aren’t allowed. There are three candidates in the running for provincial leader in the DA heartland this weekend.
Interim Provincial leader Bonginkosi Madikizela will be hoping to make the position permanent. It could be fourth time lucky for former Western cape police commissioner Lennit Max. He ran against De Lille in 2015 and lost. Then there is surprise candidate, Anda Ntsodo. Ntsodo is the Cape Metro Regional Chairperson and an ally of De Lille’s.
