Last week friday, President Cyril Ramaphosa praised MTN for its transformative impact on millions of lives across South Africa and Africa, highlighting the company’s role in digital inclusion and economic empowerment. Speaking at MTN’s 30th-anniversary gala, the President noted how the company has evolved from a small start-up to a global telecommunications leader, employing over 17,500 people in 18 markets.
Ramaphosa emphasized MTN’s contributions to economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa, with the mobile sector generating over US$140 billion in value. MTN provides essential services, including voice, data, fintech, and digital solutions, to 288 million customers. Its Mobile Money service has enabled over 65 million people to access financial services, promoting financial inclusion.
The President also acknowledged the telecommunications sector’s role in democratizing access to public services, such as health, education, and social welfare. He recalled the unequal access to telephony in South Africa during the apartheid era and credited pioneers like Dr. Nthato Motlana and Zwelakhe Sisulu for recognizing mobile technology’s potential to bridge this gap.
Ramaphosa celebrated MTN’s role in shaping Africa’s digital progress, driven by the continent’s youth, and its commitment to strengthening trade and investment ties across Africa. He expressed confidence in MTN’s future, especially with the opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area, and emphasized the company’s continued support for South Africa’s development.
