The Student Representative Council of the University of the Witwatersrand (SRC) has described the decision to extend the contract of Vice-Chancellor Adam Habib as “incredibly frustrating”.
Wits announced today that the University Council decided to appoint Habib for a second term.
Zamayirha Peter, Academic Officer of the SRC, says they voiced their opposition to the extension of Habib’s tenure during consultation.
“We spoke on issues concerning the amount of transformation that has come – or the lack thereof – during his time in office,” explains Peter.
She adds that they also raised concerns over the manner in which Habib dealt with the #FeesMustFall protests.
The chairperson of the Council of the University, Dr Randall Carolissen, has however praised Habib for the manner in which he dealt with the concerns raised by students.
“I believe that Professor Habib acted at all times with integrity and with the best interests of the university at heart.”
Peter says the SRC is exploring its options to oppose the appointment.
