Who are these iconic women being honoured at the Union Buildings?
PRETORIA, 3 August (TownPress) — The Presidency, in partnership with the Charlotte Mannya-Maxeke Institute (CMMI) and various diplomatic missions, will host the inaugural International Portraits of Power exhibition at the Union Buildings on Tuesday. The event, held at the Amphitheatre, aims to celebrate extraordinary women who have shaped nations through their leadership and courage.
The exhibition features a series of portraits of iconic women whose legacies reflect the values and aspirations of their respective countries. These women were nominated by their own nations, and their portraits were produced by South African artists working in collaboration with international diplomatic missions.
According to the Presidency, this initiative is a central part of the South African government’s Women’s Month programme. It forms part of the recently launched Milestones of Freedom campaign, which focuses on preserving the history of women’s liberation and strengthening cultural diplomacy.
The event is expected to draw a wide range of attendees, including government representatives, academics, and cultural practitioners from Africa, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. Each portrait serves as a visual interpretation of the nominated woman’s contribution to global history and social progress.
Beyond the artistic display, the exhibition highlights the ongoing effort to honour women’s activism towards equality. By showcasing these global figures in the capital, the government seeks to foster deeper international ties while reflecting on the historical struggle for gender parity.
