KWAZULU-NATAL — The Department of Correctional Services has revealed that affluent inmates in KwaZulu-Natal have been receiving preferential treatment.
According to SABC News, the National Commissioner of the Department, Samuel Thobakgale, confirmed that an investigation would be conducted into the Durban Westville Correctional Facility and the New Prison Correctional Facility in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. The investigation revealed that affluent inmates were granted passes to private hospitals.
Thobakgale vehemently condemned the purported events.
“We are not supposed to be treating offenders differently. There are rules, we have a standard operating procedure, we also follow the Correctional Services Act, and we have to comply with the Constitution,” he said.
He mentioned that the inquiry will unveil if the correctional institutions adhered to established protocols and met the requirements set forth by the Correctional Services Act.
The Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services has unearthed a startling revelation: undocumented immigrants are the leading contributors to the overcrowding crisis plaguing our correctional facilities. In light of this finding, they have urged a thorough investigation into the factors behind this pressing issue.
