Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has confirmed that he is in discussions with the club regarding a potential new contract.
The 33-year-old defender, who joined Liverpool in January 2018, is set to see his current deal expire at the end of the season.
“Discussions are ongoing, we will see what happens in the future,” said Van Dijk, emphasising his commitment to the team and his focus on winning upcoming matches.
Liverpool signed Van Dijk from Southampton for £75 million, and since then, he has played a pivotal role in helping the club secure major trophies including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.
This season, under new Dutch manager Arne Slot, Van Dijk has helped Liverpool rise to the top of the Premier League, with seven wins from their first eight games.
After Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea, Van Dijk expressed his satisfaction with his current form, stating, “I feel good, physically, mentally and I am having fun.”
Van Dijk’s leadership has been vital in Liverpool’s strong defensive performance this season, with the team conceding just three goals, the best defensive record in the league.
Meanwhile, England international Trent Alexander-Arnold and Egypt forward Mohamed Salah also have contracts that expire next summer, though there has been no recent update on their negotiations.
The unresolved contract situations of Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold, and Salah have been a source of anxiety for Liverpool supporters, but Van Dijk’s openness about the ongoing negotiations offers some reassurance.
However, his comments still leave room for uncertainty about his future, possibly as a negotiation tactic.
Manager Arne Slot highlighted Van Dijk’s influence off the pitch, stating, “What you guys don’t see and what I do see is how important he also is on the training ground.”
One thing that remains clear is Van Dijk’s importance to Liverpool. He has been instrumental in six clean sheets from the 10 games he has played this season.
