Two men have allegedly been arrested in connection with the killing of Mark Lifman, a well-known figure linked to Cape Town’s alleged criminal networks. However, police have yet to officially confirm the arrests.
The 57-year-old was fatally shot on Sunday at George’s Garden Route Mall, where he was reportedly ambushed by assailants carrying assault rifles.
According to sources, the suspects fled the scene in a white VW Golf with fake license plates. The vehicle’s details were circulated by the police, leading to the arrest of two white men in Uniondale who are currently being questioned.
The incident sparked extensive discussion on social media, with Capetonians speculating about the possible motive, as Lifman had been involved in a High Court case and was linked to rivalries within Cape Town’s notorious underworld.
Many were puzzled by the fact that Lifman was without his usual bodyguard protection at the time of the attack.
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Andre Traut confirmed that an investigation is ongoing but declined to share further details.
The police have not disclosed the identities of the suspects or the involvement of other individuals.
Lifman’s death occurs amidst a series of publicised legal disputes, including a defamation case against entrepreneur Randolf Jorberg.
Lifman filed a lawsuit against Jorberg, who accused him of extortion and the murder of a doorman—allegations that Lifman’s legal team denied due to insufficient evidence.
His long-standing connections to Cape Town’s nightclub security sector and alleged underworld feuds have generated ongoing tension.
His influence reportedly triggered conflicts with other prominent figures, resulting in violent incidents and protracted court cases.
