The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) says two people have been killed in a Mosque in Malmesbury, outside Cape Town. The MJC says it is shocked to the core following the attack in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The Council says two worshipers were killed and one wounded while observing the ritual of I’tikaaf. I’tikaaf is normally observed during the last 10 days of Ramadan as a period of intense spiritual introspection. This incident follows the attack on a mosque at Verulam in KwaZulu-Natal last month, in which one person was killed and two wounded.
MJC deputy president, Maulana Abdul-Khaliq Allie is shocked.
“The Muslim Judicial Council can confirm the incident during the latter part of the night, early in the morning. And two members of the community have been killed. As the Muslim Judicial Council, we condemn killing of innocent people from wherever place it comes from. There’s no justification to take the life of any person.”
Western Cape police have confirmed that a suspect was shot and killed by authorities after the incident occurred. Police say several others were wounded during the attack. Police spokesperson Andrè Traut says officers are still on the scene.
“Provincial detectives are currently combing a crime scene for clues following the death of two people at a mosque in Malmesbury during the early hours of this morning. Malmesbury police were called out to a local mosque and found two people stabbed to death and several injured. The suspect, believed to be in his thirties and armed with a knife was still on the scene and charged at the police who tried to persuade him to hand himself over. He ignored the calls and tried to attack police. He was shot and killed in the process. His death will be investigated by IPID.”
