Pretoria – The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) has obtained a court interdict against those protesting against the outsourcing of services at universities.
The protesters had prevented the university’s staff and students from gaining access to the Pretoria West campus on Monday, which led to campus activities being suspended on Monday and Tuesday.
Subsequent disruptions occurred at the Arts and Arcadia campuses on Tuesday, where activities have also been suspended.
The university said the interdict it obtained on Tuesday covers all of the university’s campuses and sites.
“An institutional task team, which was constituted in December 2015 to address the insourcing of outsourced services, continued its discussions on Tuesday. An invitation was once again extended to representatives of the affected workers to attend the meeting.
“Unfortunately, the task team meeting was disrupted when a group of protesters gained access to and vandalised the venue. As a result, the university has resolved not to resume activities at the Pretoria West, Arts and Arcadia campuses until further notice,” the university said.
Managers and supervisors will be in contact with staff members required to be on duty.
Students who still need to register have been advised to go online at www.tut.ac.za.
Registration for B Tech postponed
The university management has also apologised for the postponement of the registration of B Tech students, who were invited to report for registration on 25 January 2016.
The registration was scheduled for 6pm. However, due to the suspension of all activities at the Pretoria West campus, it had to be postponed.
The institution said the new registration arrangements will be communicated by the relevant departments after the situation at the campus has normalised.
