London, United Kingdom — Tullow Oil has appointed Roald Goethe as its new independent non-executive Chair and launched a major reset of its Board as the Africa focused oil and gas group pushes ahead with efforts to refinance its debt and streamline governance.
The company announced that Goethe’s appointment as Chair is effective from 1 December 2025. He has served as an independent non-executive director at Tullow since February 2023 and has been a member of the Audit and Remuneration Committees.
Goethe is a long standing oil and gas executive with extensive commercial experience in African energy markets. He previously spent more than a decade at Trafigura Group, where he helped expand the group’s oil trading activities in West Africa, and later founded Delaney Petroleum, a company focused on crude oil and petroleum product trading in West Africa and the Middle East.
He replaces former Chair Phuthuma Nhleko, who has stepped down as Chair and non-executive director to focus on other business interests. At the same time, three other independent non-executive directors, Genevieve Sangudi, Martin Greenslade and Mitchell Ingram, have also left the Board with immediate effect.
Following the changes, Tullow’s Board now consists of four members: Goethe as independent non-executive Chair, Rebecca Wiles as independent non-executive director, Chief Executive Officer Ian Perks and Chief Financial Officer Richard Miller. The company said the smaller Board is intended to be more focused and aligned and will further reduce its cost base.
Goethe, described by the company as a long term supporter who holds more than 28 million Tullow shares and around 400,000 dollars of its 2026 senior notes, said he is confident the reshaped leadership team can deliver on Tullow’s strategy and advance plans to refinance the capital structure.
The West Africa focused producer is seeking to manage a heavy debt load while dealing with delayed payments from Ghana’s government and a challenging financing environment. The board reset and new Chair appointment are positioned as part of a broader effort to stabilise the balance sheet and restore long term value for shareholders.
