TMPD confirms sergeant’s arrest and a separate disciplinary probe
PRETORIA — The Tshwane Metro Police Department has opened an internal disciplinary investigation into Sergeant Lucas Thomas Nkolele following his arrest over alleged gender-based violence, although the court matter was subsequently withdrawn. The department also confirmed that the Independent Police Investigative Directorate opened a separate investigation into his conduct.
In a statement issued on 6 November, TMPD said SAPS arrested Nkolele in Rietgat on Sunday, 1 November, over allegations of common assault and malicious damage to property. The department described the allegations as related to gender-based violence but did not disclose the circumstances of the incident.
Nkolele appeared in court in connection with the matter, which was later withdrawn, according to TMPD. The statement did not identify the court, give the date of the appearance or explain the reason for the withdrawal.
TMPD said it initiated its internal disciplinary investigation immediately after learning of the matter, with the aim of establishing the surrounding circumstances. It announced no disciplinary findings against Nkolele and did not specify whether he had been suspended or remained on duty.
The department separately confirmed that IPID had opened an investigation into the officer’s conduct. It provided no findings or further details about the progress of that inquiry, leaving the outcomes of both investigative processes unresolved.
TMPD reiterated its opposition to gender-based violence, criminality and misconduct within its ranks, saying it remained committed to maintaining public trust. Those commitments accompanied confirmation of the investigations, rather than an announcement that misconduct had been established.
No account from Nkolele was included in the material available for this report. Further information from the relevant authorities would be needed to explain the withdrawal of the court matter and establish the status of the IPID and internal disciplinary investigations.
