POLOKWANE — Three police officers have been arrested in Polokwane on allegations of corruption, prompting the province’s police commissioner to warn that SAPS cannot effectively fight crime while its own members are implicated in corrupt activities.

The officers are attached to police stations in the Sekhukhune District, although police have not yet disclosed their names, ranks or the stations where they are based.

Details of the alleged corruption have also not been released, including what the officers are accused of doing, when the alleged offences occurred or whether money was involved.

Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Jan Scheepers confirmed that investigations were continuing following the arrests.

Scheepers said corruption within the police service directly undermines the ability of officers to enforce the law and maintain the confidence of communities they are expected to protect.

Police have indicated that tackling corruption within their own ranks remains a priority, with members expected to maintain integrity and act in the interests of the communities they serve.

The arrests are particularly significant because the three accused are serving police officers. Allegations of corruption involving SAPS members can compromise criminal investigations, weaken public confidence in policing and create opportunities for other crimes where officers abuse the authority attached to their positions.

Police have not yet disclosed which investigative unit conducted the operation or provided details about when and where the officers will make their first court appearance.

The three officers are presumed innocent unless found guilty by a court. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses and the allegations are formally placed before court.
