Butterworth, Eastern Cape — The Connect for Change Trust, in partnership with the Vodacom Foundation, is calling on Vodacom customers to help raise R320,000 to complete the digital transformation of Tanga Senior Secondary School in deep rural Butterworth.
The initiative forms part of the Trust’s Digital Education pillar, which focuses on transforming quintile 1 schools into safe, digitally enabled learning environments. Phase one of the project has already been completed, with an investment of more than R300,000 used to refurbish a classroom into a computer lab, decommission pit latrines and replace them with proper ablution facilities, and install essential security infrastructure.
With infrastructure upgrades in place, phase two aims to equip the newly refurbished computer lab with devices that will give learners access to information, digital literacy skills and improved educational opportunities. The Trust is inviting Vodacom customers to contribute between R2 and R50 to help close the funding gap and finalise the project.
“At Vodacom Foundation, we believe digital technologies are essential to addressing education inequality in South Africa. The work at Tanga Senior Secondary School demonstrates what is possible when we invest in infrastructure that enables learning. We are calling on our customers to join us in this effort. Every contribution through Connect for Change helps us build a more inclusive digital future for the country’s youth,” said Buhle Vilakazi, Trustee of the Connect for Change Board.
Established in 2020, the Connect for Change Trust operates as a customer donation platform aligned with Vodacom’s purpose to connect for a better future. The Trust supports three pillars: humanitarian and welfare efforts, quality digital education and healthcare for underprivileged children, enabling customers to contribute directly to social impact initiatives.
To date, the Trust has enabled the provision of 202,795 meals to more than 1,360 vulnerable children through its partnership with the Lunchbox Fund, helping food-insecure learners remain in school and access education.
Customers can donate through the VodaPay app under My Account and Connect for Change, by dialling *111# and selecting Connect4Change, at any Vodacom store or online.
The Trust says each contribution brings Tanga Senior Secondary School closer to becoming a centre of digital excellence in rural Eastern Cape.
