SHARE

PHUTHADITJHABA — The Thabo Mofutsanyana District Police have concluded a high intensity Easter holiday operation with the arrest of 12 suspects for a range of serious offenses, including murder, rape, and the possession of illegal firearms. Despite the surge in police visibility across the district, authorities reported a concerning spike in violent crimes, with several incidents linked to public spaces and alcohol consumption.

Six of the arrests were made in connection with murder cases reported across the Nketoana, Setsoto, Maluti-a-Phofung, and Phumelela municipalities. Among the fatalities were two women who were killed in separate incidents located in Reitz and Warden. Police officials noted that the operations were a mix of proactive policing and responses to community-reported crimes, though the rise in attempted murders and sexual assaults overshadowed some of the tactical successes.

In a significant development for internal oversight, four additional suspects were taken into custody for the illegal possession of firearms and defeating the ends of justice. Among those arrested in this category was a police officer. This specific operation resulted in the seizure of four illegal firearms across Harrismith, Phuthaditjhaba, and Tseki. The arrests highlight an ongoing struggle with illegal weaponry circulating within the district.

The holiday period was also marred by reports of brutal sexual violence against vulnerable residents. Police are investigating the rape of a 66-year-old individual and several minors. In one of the most harrowing reports from the Bluegumbosch Disaster Park section, a woman was allegedly gang-raped by seven suspects while she was walking home from a local tavern. These incidents have sparked renewed concern regarding the safety of women and children in the region.

Drug enforcement teams also made headway in Marquard, where five suspects were apprehended for the possession of crystal meth and mandrax, alongside illegal ammunition. Law enforcement officials observed that many of the recorded stabbings and shooting incidents occurred in settings where individuals were under the influence of alcohol, suggesting a direct link between substance abuse and the festive season’s volatility.

The 12 suspects, along with an undocumented foreign national detained during the operations, are expected to make their first appearances in various Magistrate Courts today. Police leadership has extended gratitude to community members whose tips were instrumental in tracking down the suspects, emphasizing that public cooperation remains the most effective tool in curbing the district’s rising crime rate.
