This comes as the Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa is tipped to lead a delegation of Ministers and other non-Government organisations to interact with Soweto learners in Grade 11 and 12 at a Youth Development Expo to be held at the University of Johannesburg, Soweto Campus.
Tshimangadzo Phatela and Jessica Rivombo from Letsibogo Girls Secondary School in Meadowlands, Soweto kicked-off the Youth Development Expo pre-activation campaign with a visit to Telkom. They met with executives of four key departments of the organisation.
The Telkom Centre for Learning was their first stop, as the nucleus of the organisation’s operations. This is where the role of ICT in society was magnified as budding medical scientist, Jessica, realised that she could fulfil her dream of making medicine easily accessible to patients at a click of a button through e-health. Conversations with executives from Investor Relations and Corporate Governance enchanted Tshimangadzo, as she harbours ambitions of becoming a chartered accountant.
On day two, the spotlight was on Raymond Mhlaba High School from Tshepisong. The school’s representatives were Tidimalo Maxongo and Vuyelwa Hope. The highlight of their visit to MTN’s premises was the heap of wisdom that MTN South Africa CEO, Mr Mteto Nyati, unleashed on them. In an interview-style engagement, the learners were taken to task on their post-matric study paths. Tidimalo’s good grades in mathematics and accounting prove his strength in solving complex problems and his love for numbers, hence his ambitions of pursuing either a Civil Engineering degree, or a career as a Chartered Accountant.
Vuyelwa’s grade 11 grades were high in Physical Science, Mathematics and Life Orientation. Her dream is to study towards becoming a brain surgeon. The pre-event activation was a practical example of the expo’s aim to empower young people around issues of career choices and access to further education and training. It will also focus on encouraging healthy living lifestyles among young people. Telkom and MTN will form part of the other private sector partners that will be exhibiting on the day.
