FIFA President Gianni Infantino has demanded action after Trabzonspor fans stormed the pitch and attacked Fenerbahce players on Sunday night.

Fenerbahce was on the pitch celebrating their 3-2 win against Trabzonspor, when home fans started storming towards the visiting players.

Bright Osayi-Samuel was seen striking a fist at one fan, while Batshuayi was seen kicking another. Pictures appeared to show one of the fans entering the field and attempting to use the corner flag on the visiting team.

Eventually, players from Fenerbahce were assisted by security personnel through the tunnel and into their changing room. The violence was declared “absolutely unacceptable” by Infantino, who also urged the “relevant authorities” to take appropriate action against it.

“The violence witnessed after the Turkish Super Lig match between Trabzonspor and Fenerbahce is absolutely unacceptable – on or off the field, it has no place in our society,” he said.

The Turkish interior minister, Ali Yerlikaya, announced that an investigation has been launched and that the perpetrators will be found. The event was further condemned by the Turkish Football Federation, which also promised to penalise those involved after the investigation.

Some months ago, the Süper Lig Club president, Ankaragucu was detained for striking a referee after a match and the federation had to suspend league games.

Fenerbahce is now 30 points clear of Trabzonspor, and is only two points behind league leaders and Istanbul rivals Galatasaray.
