Eskom has confirmed that several parts of Gauteng are without electricity following a storm that swept through the Vaal region. The utility said strong winds and heavy rain damaged powerlines, causing cables to hang low.
After the storm, a truck drove into one of the lines, worsening the damage. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the line had already been isolated at the time of the incident.
Areas Affected
The following areas have been impacted by the outage:
- De Deur
- Emfuleni Local Municipality
- Midvaal Municipality
- Orkeville
- Rust Ter Vaal
Eskom teams are currently on site repairing damaged infrastructure, with power expected to be restored by around 20:00.
Separate Outage in Fourways and Surrounding Areas
In a different incident, parts of Fourways, Douglasdale, Maroeladal, Norscot, Salfred AH and Witkoppen have also been affected by power cuts.
Supply has already been restored to some neighbourhoods, while technicians continue working to reconnect the remaining affected areas. Eskom said updates will be provided as restoration progresses.
Public Safety Reminder
Eskom has warned residents to exercise caution as several provinces, including Gauteng, remain under weather warnings. Heavy rain and strong winds increase the risk of electric shock, especially near damaged power infrastructure.
The utility reminded the public to:
- Stay away from low-hanging or fallen powerlines.
- Avoid touching cables lying on the ground or draped over objects.
- Report any damaged infrastructure to Eskom or local authorities immediately.
Eskom emphasised that low-hanging lines are dangerous even if they appear inactive or harmless.
