Reports suggest that Democratic Alliance federal leader John Steenhuisen is expected to announce that he will not make himself available to contest the party’s upcoming leadership race.
The DA is scheduled to hold its national federal congress in April, where Steenhuisen had been widely expected to compete for the top position. Potential contenders include Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, and Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Solly Malatsi.
Last month, reports indicated that Steenhuisen had expressed his willingness to stand for re election for a third term, making the latest developments a notable shift within the party’s leadership dynamics.
Steenhuisen has since called a press conference to be held in Durban tomorrow, stating that he will address matters of national importance and public interest. While no further details have been disclosed, the announcement has fuelled speculation about his future role within the party.
In addition, DA Federal Council chairperson Helen Zille had also been mentioned as a possible contender in the leadership race.
This remains a developing story and further details are expected following Steenhuisen’s briefing.
