JOHANNESBURG — Springbok attack coach Tony Brown will leave the South African national setup to join New Zealand Rugby following the conclusion of the 2027 Rugby World Cup. The move marks a significant transition for the Springboks, as Brown has been instrumental in evolving the team’s offensive strategies since joining under Rassie Erasmus in 2024. Despite the announcement of his future plans, the 50-year-old coach maintained that his immediate priorities remain with the South African squad. Brown stated that his sole focus is on helping the Springboks achieve their ambitions over the next two seasons and defending their world title in Australia.

SA Rugby CEO Rian Oberholzer praised Brown for his transparency regarding his desire to return home to be closer to his family. Head coach Rassie Erasmus echoed these sentiments, welcoming the clarity the announcement provides for the team’s upcoming World Cup cycle. Erasmus noted that Brown has been upfront about the special place the All Blacks hold in his heart, ensuring there is no ambiguity within the coaching staff.

The New Zealand Rugby union has expressed significant enthusiasm regarding the appointment. NZR chief executive Steve Lancaster described Brown as a world-class talent. Reports suggest that All Blacks coach Dave Rennie played a pivotal role in securing Brown’s signature as part of a broader strategy to repatriate elite coaching personnel to New Zealand.

Before his departure in 2028, Brown faces an intensive schedule with the Springboks. His remaining tenure includes the Nations Championship and a highly anticipated four-test series against New Zealand. These fixtures serve as critical preparation for the 2027 World Cup, where Brown will look to help South Africa secure a historic title defense before heading across the Tasman.

The transition highlights the global demand for South Africa’s coaching expertise and the personal sacrifices high-level coaches make to work in the international arena. As the Springboks continue to innovate their playing style, Brown’s influence over the next 18 months will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike.
