Following the successful sell-out of its first shipment after launching in 2024, Dayun’s local importer has confirmed that South Africa’s most affordable electric vehicle (EV) is on its way back to the market.

The Dayun Yuehu S5, priced at R399,900 for the Standard model and R449,900 for the premium VIP version, remains significantly more affordable than rivals such as the BYD Dolphin (R539,900) and GWM Ora 03 (R686,950). However, it is a compact city car, measuring 3,695mm in length, making it one of the smallest vehicles available locally.

To better suit South African road conditions, Dayun has increased its top speed from 100km/h to 115km/h, improving its ability to handle short highway trips, though drivers are still advised to avoid the fast lane.

While the first shipment was primarily snapped up by businesses and fleet operators, a second batch is en route. However, Enviro Automotive, the vehicle’s official importer, has indicated that most units from this shipment have already been reserved.

The Yuehu S5, imported from China, features a 31.7 kWh ternary lithium-ion battery, offering a claimed range of 330km per charge. It supports Level 2 AC and DC fast charging, with a 220V charge taking four hours, while a DC fast charge can replenish 20% to 80% in under an hour.

Standard features include an 8.0-inch infotainment screen, 7.0-inch digital driver display, reverse camera, keyless start, climate control, electric windows, electrically adjustable front seats, and cruise control. The VIP model adds ultrasonic sensors at the front and rear for enhanced driver assistance and is equipped with a SmartLink app, enabling remote locking, unlocking, starting, and air conditioning control via a smartphone.

“While compared to larger, pricier electric SUVs, the affordable Yuehu S5 confidently carves its niche. It may not compete with luxury EVs offering bigger electric motors or extended ranges, but it remains a practical and budget-friendly option for South Africans seeking a modern, feature-packed urban EV without breaking the bank,” said Gideon Wolvaardt, Managing Director of Enviro Automotive.

The Dayun Yuehu S5 comes with a three-year/60,000km warranty and service plan, while the battery is covered separately for five years or 120,000km.
