After a year marked by significant job losses, South Africa experienced slight employment growth in the final quarter of 2024.
According to the Quarterly Employment Statistics survey released by Statistics South Africa, the formal non-agricultural sector showed signs of recovery, adding 12,000 jobs and bringing total employment in the sector to 10.64 million by December 2024.
The trade industry saw the most significant increase, contributing 42,000 new jobs, while business services added 22,000 positions. However, not all sectors experienced growth.
Statistician-General Risenga Maluleke highlighted job losses in several industries, with community services shedding 26,000 jobs, and both construction and manufacturing losing 13,000 each. The mining sector also declined, with 3,000 job cuts. On a year-on-year basis, total employment dropped by 91,000 between December 2023 and December 2024.
Full-time employment saw an increase, driven by gains in trade, business services, transport, and electricity. However, losses persisted in construction, community services, manufacturing, and mining. Over the same year-long period, full-time employment declined by 26,000.
