The family of Shiraaz Mohamed has confirmed that he is back in the country.
The South African was kidnapped in 2017 in Syria by militants of the Islamic State group while on assignment for the humanitarian charity, Gift of the Givers.
Reuters reported that a security source in Turkey said Mohammed’s return was made possible with the help of the Turkish intelligence agency.
The family has asked for privacy at this time and say they will release a statement in due course.
