The South African Revenue Service (SARS) officials recently raided the Durban home of well-known socialite and businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize, following the issuance of a search and seizure warrant.
Mkhize, who owns Premier Soccer League club Royal AM, is said to owe millions of rands to SARS.
The raid, which took place on Tuesday, is connected to SARS’s broader campaign to address tax evasion in the construction sector.
Commissioner Edward Kieswetter emphasised that the raid sends a clear message to those attempting to evade taxes.
A team of police officers and SARS officials, wearing latex gloves and masks, spent the day searching Mkhize’s property.
While the specific items sought during the search remain unclear, officials were seen leaving with documents in clear plastic bags.
According to SARS, the raid followed a preservation order and search and seizure warrant granted by the KwaZulu-Natal High Court.
These legal measures were intended to secure evidence of potential tax non-compliance and to prevent the dissolution of assets that could impede the collection of taxes.
SARS has been investigating the construction industry over recent years to ensure compliance with tax laws.
This is not the first time Mkhize has faced scrutiny from the tax authority.
In 2020, the authority obtained a liquidation order against her company, Zikhuluse Cleaning, Maintenance, and Transport, over R204 million in unpaid taxes.
