Senzo Mchunu Critiques Justice System’s Handling of Sensitive Cases
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has raised concerns about how the criminal justice system manages sensitive cases, specifically regarding bail decisions.
Mchunu plans to raise this issue with Justice Minister Thembi Simelane, arguing that current bail practices are undermining law enforcement’s efforts.
His concerns are tied to a case in KwaZulu-Natal involving a young boy who allegedly faced abused multiple times by his neighbour.
The incident occurred in November 2023, and was reported to authorities in January. The suspect was arrested and then released on bail with the condition that he relocate away from the victim.
However, he breached this condition, leading to further abuse of the child in February. The case then moved to a regional court, where a prosecutor requested a psychological assessment, resulting in the temporary withdrawal of charges and the suspect’s release.
Mchunu criticised this decision, emphasising the risks involved and the initial opposition to granting bail.
