JOHANNESBURG – Sentencing proceedings in the Zephany Nurse case get under way in the Western Cape High Court on Monday.
During judgment, Judge John Hlophe hinted that a 10-year jail term might be appropriate for the woman who Nurse as a newborn, The state has said it will ask for a hefty sentence.
Nurse was taken from her mother’s hospital bedside, three days after she was born in 1997, and was brought up by the 51-year-old woman and her husband.
The woman claimed Nurse had been given to her by an unknown woman, but Judge Hlophe dismissed her testimony as lies.
He convicted her on three charges of kidnapping, fraud and contravening the Children’s Act.
