The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has dismissed widespread rumours suggesting that beneficiaries will receive double grant payments in June, labelling the claims as completely unfounded and misleading.
The misinformation has been circulating primarily on social media, creating confusion and false expectations among grant recipients. In response, SASSA issued a public statement this week expressing concern over the rapid proliferation of fake news, which it says is increasingly targeting the agency and its services.
According to SASSA, these false reports are not only inaccurate but also designed to mislead the public, incite unnecessary panic, and instil unrealistic hope among beneficiaries. The agency clarified that there have been no official announcements indicating a double payment for June and urged the public to disregard such claims.
Paseka Letsatsi, spokesperson for SASSA, reiterated that beneficiaries should not anticipate any additional payments next month. He pointed out that recent grant increases were implemented in April in accordance with the Ministry of Finance’s March policy statement, and another increase is scheduled for October. Any other payment updates not confirmed by authorised and credible sources should be treated as misinformation.
In addition, SASSA has refuted claims suggesting that new rules affecting pension payouts will come into effect from 10 June. The agency emphasised that these assertions, which include specific dates for different provinces, have no official basis and should not be trusted.
SASSA continues to urge the public to verify information through its official platforms to avoid being misled by fake news.
