Justice Minister Michael Masutha says he has started talks with the government of the United Arab Emirates to establish a treaty that will allow the Gupta brothers to be extradited from that country.
Masutha says he met with the UAE Ambassador to South Africa recently to discuss the need to establish a mutual legal assistance and extradition agreement between the two countries.
The Guptas are wanted in South Africa with regard to allegations of involvement in state capture. Recent reports indicate that they are hiding in Dubai in the UAE. He says the ambassador had expressed a desire to facilitate the speeding up of this process.
“Especially because of the number of SA people who are in the UAE for various purposes so that necessitates stronger relations to ensure legal systems work in a mutually supportive manner.”
