- Real Madrid 2 Real Betis
- Navas gifts Betis the lead
- Ronaldo heads Madrid level
- Ramos nets late winner
Keylor Navas’ own goal mid-way through the opening half gave Real Betis the lead but Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos scored late goals in each half to complete the turnaround for Zinedine Zidane’s side.
Real Madrid knew a win would take them back to the top of the La Liga table, after Barcelona’s earlier 2-1 loss against Deportivo La Coruna.
But they struggled to imposed themselves early on with an old-fashioned 4-4-2 system set out by Zidane, compromising their usual fluidity in attacking build-ups.
And after a few half chances for either side, Real Betis were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty as Keylor Navas brought down midfielder Darko Brasanac in the area – but the referee waved play on.
Nonetheless, the visitors got their just desserts, when Navas was guilty of one of the howlers of the season; when he allowed striker Antonio Sanabria’s tame effort squirm over the line from underneath his body.
Los Blancos rallied forward looking to redeem themselves and four minutes before the break, their attacking talisman Cristiano Ronaldo was at the right place at the right time – to head home a Marcelo cross beyond goalkeeper Antonio Adan.
The second-half proved to be an evenly fought contest with Zidane’s side slightly edging the possession, but it looked likely to be a frustrating evening for the Galaticos.
But for the umpteenth time this season, captain Sergio Ramos popped up with a late winner, nine minutes from time.
Toni Kroos with the corner-kick and the Spain international unmarked in the area for a thumping header to put Real in the lead for the first-time; and moving into double figures with his 10th goal of the campaign.
Three points for the hosts moves them back into first-place, two points ahead of Barcelona, with a game in hand.
