President Cyril Ramaphosa has commended the South African Revenue Service (SARS) for its outstanding performance, highlighting its role as a model of a capable state.
In the last financial year, SARS collected a record R2.3 trillion, marking the highest revenue in its history. Writing in his weekly newsletter, Ramaphosa said the agency had emerged as a credible example of institutional rebuilding following years of corruption, political interference, and leadership upheavals that prompted the 2018 Nugent Commission of Inquiry.
SARS has been recognised for its innovative use of technology, which has simplified tax compliance for citizens. The president noted that its achievements had contributed to the authority being regarded as one of the best tax administrations globally.
Nearly all of the Nugent Commission’s recommendations have now been implemented, including the restoration of capable leadership and strengthened compliance and enforcement measures. Ramaphosa said this turnaround had exceeded expectations and demonstrated the value of commissions of inquiry in restoring institutional integrity.
He added that SARS would serve as an example for rebuilding other state institutions and advancing an ethical, capable government.
SARS is expected to undergo a leadership change in April, when the extended term of current Commissioner Edward Kieswetter comes to an end.
