PRETORIA — President Cyril Ramaphosa has formally welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire in the Middle East, signaling South Africa’s hope that the move will lead to a definitive end to the long-standing conflict. Speaking at the Sefako Makgatho Presidential Guesthouse during a Credentials Ceremony on Wednesday, the President emphasized that the cessation of hostilities must serve as a foundation for a permanent resolution.

South Africa has consistently positioned itself as a vocal proponent of mediation over military intervention. President Ramaphosa reiterated this stance, calling for dialogue to prevent further loss of human life and the destruction of property. He maintained that no military solution could deliver the lasting peace required for the region, urging all parties to return to the negotiating table.

The President’s remarks highlight a broader push for the recognition of United Nations resolutions. South Africa has urged the international community to unequivocally uphold these resolutions, which are designed to protect civilians and facilitate ceasefire agreements. Ramaphosa underscored that South Africa’s foreign policy remains rooted in its own constitutional values of human dignity, equality, and freedom.

This diplomatic intervention comes at a time when South Africa is increasingly using its platform to advocate for a more equitable global order. The President noted that as a nation with a history marked by injustice, South Africa feels a particular responsibility to seek a world defined by friendship rather than force. He argued that international law and the sovereignty of nations must be respected to maintain global stability.

The implications of this ceasefire are significant for international relations. Ramaphosa stressed that in an interconnected world, challenges such as conflict, poverty, and the climate crisis cannot be solved in isolation. He called for a renewed commitment to multilateral diplomacy and global solidarity, suggesting that adherence to international treaties is the only way to overcome the profound challenges currently facing the globe.
