R20 train rides for Pirates and Sundowns fans at MTN8 final
DURBAN — Football supporters attending Saturday’s MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns at Moses Mabhida Stadium will be able to travel by train for just R20 return, as the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) introduces extended services across Durban.
The special arrangements are intended to ease traffic congestion and parking pressure around the stadium ahead of the highly anticipated clash, which kicks off at 18:00 on 10 October.
According to PRASA, trains will operate along five corridors: uMlazi, KwaMashu, Pinetown, Crossmoor and the South Coast. Services will transport supporters to Moses Mabhida Station until 17:30, giving passengers time to reach the stadium before kick-off.
A dedicated shuttle between Durban Station and Moses Mabhida Station will operate every 30 minutes from 13:00 until 18:00.
After the match, services along the five corridors will resume at 20:00 and continue until 22:00. A further shuttle from Moses Mabhida Station to Durban Station will operate between 22:00 and 22:30 to accommodate supporters making onward connections.
Motorists who prefer to drive part of the journey can use limited park-and-ride facilities at Durban Station, uMlazi Station and KwaMnyandu Mall. Parking will cost R50 per vehicle.
PRASA has encouraged supporters to plan their journeys ahead of time, particularly those travelling from areas outside central Durban.
The transport arrangements come as Orlando Pirates prepare to defend their MTN8 title against Mamelodi Sundowns in one of the biggest fixtures on the domestic football calendar.
With thousands of supporters expected to descend on Moses Mabhida Stadium, the additional rail services offer an alternative to driving into the city and competing for parking near the venue.
PRASA said detailed train schedules would be published through its official digital platforms before Saturday’s match.
