JOHANNESBURG – The Ekurhuleni Municipality says it has made progress repairing the Rynfield substation’s transformer and power is expected to be restored this afternoon.
The substation exploded yesterday at around the same time as two mini substations in the Crystal Park area.
Northern parts of Benoni have been in the dark and water reservoirs have been affected.
The municipality says while there are only minor repairs needed on the transformer, at worst power will be restored by 2pm today.
Spokesperson Themba Gadebe says the power will definitely be restored by later today and water tankers are on standby for affected areas.
“As it stands now, we’ve completed 90 percent of the repairs. So we only have 10 percent to go in order for us to complete the entire operation. We are nearly ready to switch on the transformer.”
