Police are reportedly taking a statement from North West businessman and political fixer Brown Mogotsi, days after he claimed that his car was shot at in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg.

According to media reports, members of the South African Police Service were with Mogotsi and his legal team at an undisclosed location on Wednesday afternoon.

Newzroom Afrika reported that in addition to the attempted murder case, investigators were questioning Mogotsi about matters relating to defeating the ends of justice, fraud, and corruption.

Anti-crime activist and Crime Watch presenter Yusuf Abramjee shared on X that police were believed to be taking Mogotsi’s statement on Wednesday.

He added that Mogotsi, who alleged that his vehicle came under fire on Monday night, had failed to appear at the Vosloorus police station on Tuesday despite an earlier request from police.

Background to the Alleged Attack

The incident gained attention earlier in the week when Mogotsi’s Chevrolet sedan was found with around 11 bullet holes in Vosloorus.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that investigators found no evidence of injury or blood at the scene. An attempted murder case was subsequently opened.

When asked about the possibility of the attack being staged, Mathe said that if police determined the incident was fabricated, Mogotsi could face charges of defeating the ends of justice.

She added that police resources had been deployed to investigate the matter and that a false claim would amount to a diversion of those resources.

Investigation Underway

As of Wednesday afternoon, police had not issued an official statement confirming their engagement with Mogotsi.

However, sources within law enforcement told reports that officers were recording his account of the events and conducting ballistic analysis on the vehicle.

Mogotsi’s name has previously been mentioned in testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is investigating alleged criminal syndicates and political interference in law enforcement. His claim of an attempted hit has therefore drawn national attention and public interest.

Police are expected to complete Mogotsi’s formal statement and finalise forensic tests in the coming days. Crime experts have cautioned that should the investigation reveal that the incident was staged, Mogotsi could face further charges of defeating the ends of justice.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
