The police portfolio committee has criticised Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia and National Commissioner Fannie Masemola for failing to attend a scheduled meeting on Wednesday.
The committee said their absence undermines accountability, particularly as the police face serious challenges, including ongoing investigations by a judicial commission of inquiry and a parliamentary ad hoc committee into corruption within the service.
Cachalia and Masemola were expected to appear to discuss the South African Police Service’s annual report and financial statements. Committee chairperson Ian Cameron was forced to defer the meeting, leaving presentations from entities such as the Auditor-General pending.
Cameron emphasised that the minister’s attendance at Cabinet could not justify missing the committee session, stating that the committee’s requests to adjust scheduling had not been accommodated and highlighting the urgent need for oversight amid the SAPS crisis.
