JOHANNESBURG – Police are now engaging with fuel station managers across the country to monitor the sale of petrol to #FeesMustFall protesting students, in efforts to put a stop to the torching of property during demonstrations.
This was revealed during a briefing by Acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane in Pretoria yesterday.
Phahlane says there have been several reports of arson and petrol bomb attacks during fees demonstrations.
Phahlane says on several occasions, police officers have been discovering large quantities of petrol at various campus locations across the country.
“There have been several reports of arson, petrol bomb attacks, petrol bombs or large quantities of petrol being found.”
He says police are now engaging managers at fuel stations to try and trace the culprits.
“I know they said the Shell garage in Hatfield, close to UP, the same protesters were there looking for petrol, so that petrol station’s management had to be engaged.”
Phahlane says police will not be deterred from executing the duties of ensuring all citizens of the country are safe.
