Eskom has scheduled electricity supply interruptions across parts of Gauteng on Friday, 25 April, to carry out essential maintenance on the distribution network.
Residents in Vosloorus, specifically in Extensions 6, 10, 22, and 30, should expect an outage from 9:00 to 18:00. Other areas including Bluegum, Duduza, Masechaba, and Tsakane Extension 17 will experience a shorter disruption, from 9:00 until 17:00.
The power utility emphasised the need for this planned interruption as part of critical work to maintain and improve the performance of its distribution lines.
Customers have been advised to handle all electrical appliances with caution during the outage period, as power supply may be restored without notice.
Though temporary, these disruptions are part of Eskom’s broader infrastructure maintenance strategy aimed at enhancing system reliability ahead of increased winter demand.
The utility revealed that 15.41% of its generation capacity is currently allocated to planned maintenance — an increase from last year’s 11.61%.
In total, 8,974MW of capacity is undergoing work, aimed at improving the reliability of the fleet and ensuring compliance with environmental standards.
Despite ongoing maintenance, Eskom confirmed that there are currently no load shedding requirements, with the national grid stable enough to handle electricity needs over the upcoming long weekend. Emergency reserves remain available and will be used strategically if necessary.
In a further update, Eskom reported a noticeable decrease in its reliance on diesel-fuelled Open Cycle Gas Turbines (OCGTs). The load factor for these units dropped to 9.78% over the past week, a marked improvement from the 29.95% recorded earlier this month.
Additionally, the Unplanned Capacity Loss Factor has seen improvement, falling to 27.48% from 30.15% over the same period last year. These figures indicate a gradual shift away from diesel dependency and some progress in Eskom’s operational performance.
While Friday’s outages are planned and scheduled, Eskom warned that unforeseen technical issues may still lead to adjustments in timing or scope.
